For development as well as production processes, the reliable characterization and adjustment of near eye displays (NED) used in AR/VR headsets is a necessity and challenge. During the development process, highly accurate measurement results are needed to optimize the NED quality. On the other hand in production, fast results are extremely important, but have to be comparable to the accurate measurement outcome determined during the development process. In this article, color and luminance measurements of a NED are compared, which have been taken with two different measurement devices, based on varying working principles. For lab use, the highly accurate goniophotometer DMS, equipped with optics to mimic the human eye, has been selected. This device provides accurate color and luminance values based on spectral measurements but needs several hours to complete a full measurement. For production use, the spectrally enhanced imaging colorimeter LumiTop, equipped with an array spectroradiometer and a wide field-of-view lens is used to take the measurements. The LumiTop system allows to measure the complete field of view of the NED in a few seconds and with spectroradiometric accuracy. The measurement results of both devices are compared and presented. The device under test is a near eye display which consists of a pancake lens with LCD display.
